During the peak of the pandemic, we brainstormed on how we as a team can help make the world a better place despite being in lockdown, and along came the idea of virtually adopting an animal that counts as an endangered species. Unfortunately, there are many species and really, we could have closed our eyes and pointed on the screen that was showing the long list of endangered animals.

We were planning on making the panda digitally come to life and actually become a Tourisfair team member, becoming the first point of contact for anyone interested in getting a tailored trip plan for their next vacation.
<figure><img alt="" src="https://cdn-images-1.medium.com/max/1024/1*KlWeaVq9wxEZF6b61Vvb_Q.png"></figure>The <a href="https://www.pandasinternational.org/other-ways-to-help-the-giant-pandas/adopt-a-panda/">website</a> currently offers partnerships for 86 pandas in their care, and when I’m telling you, we wanted to adopt them all. Luckily, we can count on our community and decided to involve them in the selection process.
<h4>The Selection Process</h4>
We chose 16 random pandas, 8 females, 8 males. And posted the first four on March 2nd, 2022 on our social media channels. The community was able to place votes by choosing the like-icon of whichever panda they wanted to move into the quarter final.

The Selection Process of Tourisfair’s Panda Adoption

Because we are on a mission. Period. No, but seriously. Of all industries, the travel industry has suffered pretty badly because of the pandemic. Yet here we are. We have decided to set foot into the world of human kind’s oldest habit because we are certain that travelling will never die. And the demand for a helping hand before travelling to foreign destinations by giving an outline of what can be seen and done increases as well.

It could have been any endangered animal but our community apparently has a soft spot for the black and white, clumsy bear. So do we. Thankfully, travellers requests have shifted towards sustainable and eco-friendly trips more than ever before. Meaning that our mindset changed to still wanting to travel but at the sime time be mindful of the environment and if possible support the destination’s local businesses.

But we took it to the next level and decided to adopt an endangered animal by applying for a partnership and contribute to the upbringing of such.

The decision-making process included a survey on our social media channels where we asked which of the endangered animals we should adopt. The majority placed their votes for the Giant Panda. And it was then, we discovered that we could still change our corporate identity and branding to fully dedicate it to the panda. Our logo icons resembemled the distinctive panda eyes and we came across more facts that strengthened our decision. The word ‘Pan’ originates from the Greek word pân, meaning “all”, “of everything”, “involving all members” (of a group). In association to our brand and business whose focus it is to offer all travellers around the world a personalized and unforgettable guided experience while on a trip, the short inclusion of “Pan” within Panda definitely fits perfectly.

But the inclusion of our communitie’s wishes and opinions doesn’t end here. They have chosen the name: Pandi They have chosen our current new logo. And they are currently choosing who is going to be our new family member out of 16 adoptable pandas.
<h4>Pandi — The Trip Planner Pro</h4>
The plan is to make Pandi virtually come to life and illustrate them next to having actual and regular information on the current circumstances of our adoptee. Pandi will be the first point of contact for anyone interested in getting their travel plans customized pre trip. We have yet to find out the characteristics and we have yet to teach Pandi the know-how but this is our take on revolutionizing the way start-ups in the travel industry should go about their business.

Why on Earth would a Start-Up adopt a Panda?

According to a booking.com survey, more than ever before, travellers seak for sustainable and eco-friendly ways to travel. They are willing to pay additional charges to keep their carbon footprint small, and support local businesses and accomodation owners. So, how do we as a start-up in the travel industry deal with increasing demands for green travels?

Let’s make one thing clear — <a href="https://www.tourisfair.de/">Tourisfair</a> is not a travel agency. However, offering services to travellers and being part of the tourism sector leads to just as much responsibility when it comes to sustainability. Letting us plan your trip by recommending fitting activities in each and every destination is one side of our business. On the other side of the spectrum are for example all the city trip activities that ensure you’re having the time of your life and an unforgettable experience in any wherever you are, and you as the traveller have ultimately contributed to a sustainable cycle.

The two main reasons an animal species becomes endangered, or is threatened by extinction are a loss of habitat and a loss of genetic variation. And believe it or nor, the tourism industry is not innocent either. Especially mass tourist hotspots interfere with most animal’s terrains, which forces them to wander off. We are aware of this sad fact and won’t sugar coat anything. So how can we as part of the travel industry, <a href="https://www.tourisfair.de/">service provider for trips</a>, and animal lover do good and compensate for envirionmental damage caused by the industry? We decided to adopt.

Every single one of us should have a different approach on living a more sustainable life style. Changes in travel habits could be avoiding short distance flights, light packing, never support and participate in tourist attractions involving touching, riding on, or photo sessions with wild animals, taking your own bags and eco-friendly bottles with you, offset your CO2-emmissions, and so on. During the peak of the pandemic, we brainstormed on how we as a <a href="https://www.tourisfair.de/">start-up</a> and team could virtually contribute to the environment. It was important to us, that our donations are trackable and that we could actually receive regular information on the current circumstances. Virtual partnerships for animals are nothing new, but our plan was to make our new family member come to life by digitally illustrating and implementing them into our branding, so our community could get in touch with them and in future, even receive travel plans made by them.

We then initiated a poll to find out which of the animals our community would choose for us to adopt and the mojority placed their votes for the Giant Panda. Soon after making the initial decision to adopt, we more or less coincidentally discovered something within our logo. When viewed sideways, the destination icons appeared to look just like eyes — not any eyes. The very distinctive eyes only one specific animal is known for, even without seeing other body parts — the panda. But discovering the logo’s similarity with panda eyes and our community voting for the panda cannot entirely be a coincidence.

Deciding to set foot into the travel industry came along with wanting to keep it sustainable. We understand that the way people travel and arrange their time spent abroad has shifted towards sustainability significantly due to environmental changes. And we understand it even more because it affects our personal travel experiences.

Compared to his apex predator cousins, the Panda is a proud vegetarian whose diet mainly consists of bamboo which he spends 10–16 hours a day feeding on. However, the Chinese also view pandas as a symbol of good luck and happiness which is exactly what we want to spread by providing our community with tailored and suitable activities throughout their travels. Hence why, our future adoptee will actively support us to create the perfect trips. It will take some time and practice but we are certain that our new Tourisfair family member will become the best trip planner.

Operation: Pandi Adoption

<h3>May I introduce myself — I’m Pandi. Nice to meet you.</h3>
The Tourisfair Team decided to adopt a panda and let their community place votes on a month long quest to find me. And here I am.
<figure><img alt="" src="https://cdn-images-1.medium.com/max/1024/1*9-d06R7d91fak8R83FTrjQ.png"></figure>I was told that, far away, in Europe, a team of two entrepreneurs brainstormed on how to revolutionize the startup travel industry and came up with the idea to adopt an animal of an endangered species — which I am.
I know that there are other animals who need help with repopulation but the majority of their community fortunately chose the Giant Panda.

I was born on August 21st, 2021 at Wolong Shenshuping Base in China, where I’m currently having the time of my life. The care takers are there for us 24/7, feed us, and play with us. If one of us gets stuck while roaming around, they help us. too.
My absolute favourite food is bamboo! Although I also need some milk until I’ve reached adulthood. Until then, I’m enjoying my childhood here at Wolong Shenshuping Base.

They’ve asked me if I’d like to help out planning trips for everyone interested in future, and I immediately said yes. Because I know, in order to create the perfect trip plans, I have to travel myself to get first hand experience, and who wouldn’t want that?!
I will start my apprenticeship to gain more knowledge very soon and am happy to meet you and many other travelers. Don’t worry, I am a Giant Panda, but won’t get taller than 90 centimeters ;)
